Chopard official timekeeper to the 1000 Miglia race
35 years as official timekeeper

1000 Miglia 2022

For the 35th consecutive year, Chopard served as world sponsor and official timekeeper to the Mille Miglia race which started on Wednesday 15 June. 425 racers conquered 1,000 miles across the Italian landscape, through more than 200 villages and towns, led by number 46, Andrea Vesco and his co-driver Fabio Salvinelli, in their 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Super Sport.

On the road again

‘Clockwise’ was back this year, however, after the anti-clockwise format last used in the 1950s was re-visited in 2021, and after the starting flag dropped at 1.30pm on Wednesday 15 June, the cars headed off from Brescia in one-minute intervals going in order of age (oldest first). With more than 400 competitors to wave off on this occasion, the last left the tree-lined Viale Venezia well after 8 pm.

Initially contestants made for Lake Garda, passing through the waterside towns of Salo and Sirmione along the way before proceeding to Mantua and on to the first overnight stop in Cervia-Milano Marittima – a total run of more than 300 km that, for the drivers of older cars, meant at least six hours on the road.

Day Two on Thursday 16 June, saw the convoy head for Rome on a more arduous, 500-km drive that took them via the remarkable mountain top republic of Norcia before bringing them into the

Eternal City well after dark, prior to Friday morning’s rude pre-dawn awakening.

Saturday’s fourth and final leg followed a route of little more than 150 km punctuated by a stop at the Monza race circuit in order to complete a tricky, timed auto-test – for which the teams certainly needed their Mille Miglia Race Edition chronographs - and the magnificently beautiful city of Bergamo. After this it was (literally) downhill all the way to the finish line in Brescia – where the first of more than 400 different 1000 Miglia adventures was told…

Gentlemen drivers

This year again, Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele demonstrated his passion for driving classic cars by taking his place on the starting line.
With him in a strawberry-red Mercedes-Benz 300SL 'Gullwing' was motorsport legend Jacky Ickx, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s co-driver on more than 16 occasions. From their first race in 1989 in that same 1955 Gullwing, to 2021,

the friendship between these like-minded gentlemen drivers has kept growing, reflecting the spirit and camaraderie that this race is renowned for. The two friends led a team of five Chopard cars that included an Ermini Sport 1100 (1954) driven by Milan-based fashion guru Alessandro Squarzi, a Porsche 356 (1957) with Chopard Ambassador Romain Dumas at the wheel, a beautiful 1956 Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sport and a Fiat 1100 with rare Zagato bodywork.

An enduring shared passion

Racing driver legend and Chopard ambassador Jacky Ickx and Chopard Co-President, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele share a close relationship spanning over three decades, which has included the completion of several 1000 Miglia editions together. In the following video, Jacky Ickx talks about the common aspects between beautiful cars and fine watches and the importance of the talented people behind the scenes who are responsible for their success.

The winning competitors

Crew number 46, formed by Andrea Vesco and Fabio Salvinelli aboard the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS Zagato of 1929, repeated the success achieved in the 2021 edition of the race. For Andrea Vesco, also first in 2020 alongside his father Roberto, there was the double satisfaction of having conquered a 22-year long taboo, previously accomplished by Giuliano Canè who managed to win three consecutive editions of the "most beautiful race in the world” between 1998 and 2000.
